Panel Repair

You May Not Need a Whole New Door

A backed-into bottom section doesn't automatically mean replacing the entire door. If the model is still in production and the rest of the sections are sound, swapping the damaged panel is usually the better economics.

The catch is matching. Panel profiles, finishes and hardware change between model years, and discontinued doors can't be matched at all. That's the first thing we determine when we look at the job.

As an authorized Clopay dealer we can source sections across the current residential and commercial lines. Where a match isn't possible, we'll tell you plainly and quote the replacement instead.

  • When Panel Replacement Makes Sense
  • Vehicle impact damage to one or two sections
  • Cracked or split panel from an impact or freeze
  • Rot in a single wood section on an otherwise sound door
  • Rusted-through bottom section from road salt
  • Delaminated insulation on one panel
  • Door is under 10 years old and still in production
  • Remaining sections show no rust, rot or warping
  • Springs, tracks and opener are in good condition

What We Do

Panel & Section Services

Three tiers: repair the panel, replace the section, or replace the door — assessed honestly against what your door is worth keeping.

Most common

Single Section Replacement

Damaged panel removed, matching section installed, hardware transferred and the door rebalanced for the new weight.

Impact

Bottom Section Replacement

The most frequently damaged panel. Includes new bottom bracket, weather seal and retainer where needed.

Cosmetic

Dent & Surface Repair

Not every damaged panel needs replacing. Shallow dents in steel skin can often be worked back out, surface rust sanded and repainted, and small holes and scratches filled and refinished.

Wood doors

Wood Repair & Refinishing

Minor cracks and splits in wood panels sanded and refinished. Rotted rails and stiles repaired or the section rebuilt to match.

Structure

Strut Reinforcement

Wide doors flex without struts, and flexing cracks panels. We add or replace struts on doors that need them.

Honest call

Repair vs. Replace Quote

When the door is discontinued or multiple sections are failing, we quote a replacement door alongside the panel option.

Economics

When to Replace the Whole Door

Multiple damaged sections, a discontinued model, or a door already past 20 years generally point to full replacement.

Rule of thumb: if panel work runs past a third of a new door's installed price, put the money into the new door.

Safety

Damaged Panels Aren't Just Cosmetic

A cracked section flexes under load. That transfers stress to the hinges and rollers and eventually pulls the door out of alignment.

A compromised bottom section also breaks the weather seal, letting water and pests into the garage.

Before you call: photograph the damage and the manufacturer label inside the door. Model and year are what determine whether a section can be sourced.

FAQs

Common Questions

Can one garage door panel be replaced?

Often yes, if the model is still in production and the other sections are sound. It's typically far cheaper than a full door replacement.

How do I know if my door model is still available?

The manufacturer label inside the door lists the model and year. Send us a photo and we'll check availability.

When can a panel be repaired instead of replaced?

When the damage is cosmetic and the panel is still structurally sound — early surface rust, shallow dents, small scratches and holes, or minor cracks in wood. Severely bent, warped or split panels are a security and safety issue and get replaced.

Will a replacement panel match my existing door?

On current models, yes — same profile and factory finish. On older doors that have weathered, a new section can look slightly newer until it ages in.

Is panel replacement or a new door cheaper?

One panel on a newer door is almost always cheaper. Once you're replacing two or more sections, the numbers usually favor a new door.

How long does panel replacement take?

Typically a few hours once the section arrives. Ordering time depends on the model and finish.
