Signs Your Garage Door Springs Are Wearing Out

Garage door springs rarely fail without warning. Catching the signs of fatigue early prevents the sudden snap that traps your car and creates a safety hazard.

    Why springs wear out

Torsion springs are rated for a specific number of open-close cycles — typically 10,000 to 20,000 for standard springs. Each cycle winds and unwinds the spring, gradually fatiguing the steel. A household opening the door twice daily uses about 7,300 cycles per year, so standard springs last roughly 7 to 12 years. Coastal humidity and salt air across NYC and Long Island accelerate rust, shortening that window.

Sign 1: The door feels heavy

When springs lose tension, they stop counterbalancing the door's weight. The opener has to work harder and the door feels heavy when lifted manually. A properly balanced door should stay where you place it — lift it to waist height and let go; it should hold steady or move only slightly. If it drops, the springs are fatigued.

Sign 2: The opener strains or stops

If the opener hums louder than usual, takes longer to lift the door, or stops partway up, it is working against insufficient spring tension. The motor is compensating for springs that can no longer hold the door's weight. Continuing to run an opener with weak springs burns out the motor — the springs should be replaced before the opener fails too.

Sign 3: A gap in the spring coil

A visible gap of two to three inches in the tightly wound coil is a sign a spring has already snapped but the door may still be propped open. If you see a gap, keep everyone away from the door and do not attempt to open or close it — the door is no longer counterbalanced and can crash down.

Sign 4: Loud bang in the garage

A sharp bang or gunshot-like sound from the garage is the sound of a torsion spring snapping. The spring releases all its stored tension at once. After this, the door will not lift with the opener and is unsafe to move manually. Call for emergency spring replacement immediately.

Sign 5: The door opens unevenly

If one side of the door rises faster than the other, one spring has lost more tension than its pair. This uneven lift stresses the cables, tracks, and opener, and the weaker spring is near full failure. Both springs should be replaced as a matched pair to restore balanced lifting.

    When to schedule replacement

If your springs are over 7 years old or showing any of these signs, schedule a spring inspection before failure. Replacing springs proactively costs less than an emergency call after a snap, and it prevents the door being stuck shut with your car inside. A technician assesses the spring wire size, cycle rating, and door weight to install the correct matched pair.
